The UK Chart Number 1's of 1986
Two of the number one records from 1986 were later
remade as charity records for comic relief. Boyzone did when the
going gets tough and Gareth Gates covered the cover version of
spirit in the sky, originally a number 1 hit for one hit wonder
Norman Greenbaum in 1970.
Sir Cliff was back at the top spot with his 1959 classic
number 1 living Doll, this time he teamed up with the young ones
to make a comedy charity version. Unfortunately comedy records are
only funny once, the second time you hear it you know the joke and
after a few more listens it becomes boring, in fact very boring
indeed. However you cant knock the King of UK rock'n'roll and the
young ones were brilliant, so this tune escapes our pop flops of
the 80s list, unlike Neil's 1984 solo effort, hole in my shoe which
was meant to be boring. The chicken song is also on our naughty
list although but as a parody of naff records it does almost manage
to escape, but only almost.
